The Power of Belief

Every belief we have contains many agreements—personal laws about what we should do, what we shouldn’t do, and how everyone else is supposed to be. The old agreements that arise out of what we choose to believe can intensely affect our lives, but we don’t always remember how we came to our strongest beliefs. Even more confounding, many of the beliefs that powerfully guide our actions operate invisibly on a level far below what we are conscious of.

What you believe affects your relationships, where you choose to live, what you decide to buy how you raise your children, the state of your health, wealth, and mind—as well as the work you do.

Belief impacts the dynamics of organizations, spawns or stifles innovation, muddles communication, defines religious faith, ignites terrorism, divides political opinion, shapes emerging trends, and drives every economy—close to home or halfway across the world.

What we believe is far more than what we think is true. What is rational, reasonable, and occupies our thoughts is often no more than a set of opinions—judgments we constantly need to defend. What we really believe, what shines through regardless of what we tell ourselves and everyone else, spans far beyond the ever-expanding collection of information we store in our minds.

Do you always act in accord with what you say you believe?

When we are stressed, put on the spot, or simply encounter the thorny realities of daily life, our behavior doesn’t always line up with what we have told everyone we believe.

Our beliefs are energy that inhabits our body, mind, and spirit - a living dream with an emotional signature populated by specific agreements that define and defend every point of view. According to the ancient Toltecs of Mexico, the human mind dreams, not just when you are asleep, but 24 hours a day through a filter of all our beliefs and experiences, crafting a unique virtual reality, one that is different for you, than the person standing next to you.

And, in fact, everything you believe today is because you agreed to that point of view.

Try and discover what you actually believe and uncover the underlying invisible agreements you made long ago that are now running your life.

Take a Moment

Are any of these statements true for you?

  • My love-life seems like quicksand.
  • I’m just tolerating my job.
  • I feel stuck.
  • I’m driven by what I’m afraid of.
  • I’m inclined to say yes just so everyone is happy.
  • I find it hard to forgive what happened in the past. .
  • When others are upset, I’m upset too.
  • When I travel, I can only relax when I get to my destination.
  • I am my biggest critic.

If so, the biggest obstacle to living the life you dream of are the beliefs you have come from fear.
